HEAD COACH YUAN XIAO

Michigan Men's Gymnastics Assistant Coach Xiao Yuan

Yuan Xiao enters his 19th season as a member of the Wolverine coaching staff and second season as the head coach. Xiao is also a current United States National Team Coach.

As the fifth head coach in program history, Xiao most recently led the Wolverines to the 2023 Big Ten Regular Season & Conference Championship. The success in the Big Ten went along with a second-place finish at NCAAs, three NCAA individual titles, a handful of All-Americans, and countless accolades. He was named Big Ten Coach of the Year and College Gymnastics Association Regional Coach of the Year.

In 2010, he became the only active collegiate coach to help two institutions to win NCAA glory (Oklahoma & Michigan). Additionally, he guided 2010 NCAA All-Around Champion and Big Ten All-Around Champion Chris Cameron. Cameron made the US World Championship team in 2010, and was a member of the American squad that finished fourth in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

Xiao has coached several Wolverines on the international stage traveling with Cameron to the 2010 Japan Cup in Tokyo, Japan. Xiao also coached Rohan Sebastian of Team Ireland at the World University Games in Kazan, Russia, at the 2011 World Championships in Tokyo, Japan, and the 2009 World Championships in London, United Kingdom. More recently, Xiao accompanied both two student-athletes at the 2023 World Championships, at which team USA secured their first team medal since 2014 (bronze) and one athlete went on to be named the third best gymnast in the world during the All-Around finals.

Previously, he coached for five years at the University of Oklahoma. While with the Sooners, Xiao helped guide them to NCAA team titles in 2002, 2003 and 2005, as well as runner-up finishes in 2001 and 2004. He also helped coach 2004 U.S. Olympic silver medalist Guard Young while Young trained at Oklahoma. Before moving to the United States, Xiao coached several Chinese Olympic and World Championship gymnasts. In addition, he has coached athletes who have competed in three of the last four Olympiads, including Olympic all-around champion Yong Wei and Xing Aowei. Both were team gold medalists at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia, and at the 1998 World Championships. Yuan has also coached athletes won team in 1994 and 1995 World Championships. He received his bachelor's degree in sports education from Beijing Sport University in 1988 and has lectured at the USA Gymnastics National Congress from 1998.

He and his wife Julia, a former Cirque du Soleil performer, have two daughters, U-M graduate Pearl, and Sophia.

HOWEVER, CAMP ATTENDANCE AT MICHIGAN (INCLUDING ATTENDANCE AT ELITE OR ADVANCED CAMPS) IS NEVER RESTRICTED BY A CAMPER'S SKILL LEVEL OR COMPETITIVE EXPERIENCE.
